Voter Supression Is Real
And Trump is the main actor
Voter supression is nothing new. But this year in the lead-up to the presidential election, it appears that those in power are doing everything they can to discourage, prevent, block, trick and dissuade people from voting. Today, Trump tweeted about delaying the election, something that is not in his power to do as president. A few hours later, it was discounted by his party.
At the funeral of congressman John Lewis today, many speakers eloquently detailed the Civil Rights Activist’s lifelong efforts to combat voter supression. Among them was former President Obama, who said,
“Even as we sit here, there are those in power who are doing their darnedest to discourage people from voting,” Obama said during a ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia. “by closing polling locations, by targeting minorities and students with restrictive ID laws, and attacking our voting rights with surgical precision, even undermining the Postal Service in the run-up to an election that’s going to be dependent on mail-in ballots so people don’t get sick.”
It is in the power of every individual to exercise their right to change things by voting. And further than that, we must insure that every other citizen is not prevented form exercizing their right to vote.
As John Lewis said, our Democracy is not a given.
