The NYC Marathon Is One Big Block Party

And I live drew a tiny part

One of my favorite days in the city has become the day of the New York City Marathon. Everyone is happy and supportive. There’s music and cheers, strangers supporting strangers, along with friends and family supporting loved ones. There are rock and funk bands, bongo players and cowbells; supporters bring bouquets of flowers. Signs of all types, ones cheering on individuals, others ones of encouragement for all. My favorite one on Sunday was “You’re crazy….I mean YOU GOT THIS!”

I love watching the elite runners, they seem to be super-human humans. And yet I also love watching all the different people of varying ages and races, making their way through mile 24; struggling, but knowing that they did indeed do it!

As I approached the finish line along a Central Park street lined by international flags (I was not allowed in due to security and the need for a ticket. Next year!), I heard an announcer cheering the runners and calling out birthdays, finally saying to everyone, “New York welcomes you!!”

As I rode the subway home, a group of us riders spoke to a young woman who had just run the marathon. It was her first and she was elated; her proud parents there from Tennasee to support her. We all spoke about how it was an upbeat, and life-affirming day. I said to them, “Go home and tell everyone how friendly New Yorkers are!” They agreed.

We need more days like this.

Here are the drawings I did on the beautiful day.
