Sexual Assault, Ford and Kavanaugh
What we might expect
I remember intently watching the Anita Hill hearings in 1991, when she testified against the yet-to-be confirmed Supreme Court Justice candidate Clarence Thomas. She testified that he crudely and seuxually spoke to her when they both worked together. During the hearing, Senators grilled her and had her repeat embarassing comments and situations in an alarming and disrespectful manner. That was over 20 years ago, and much has happened in the world of women’s rights and gender relations. But also much has not changed. Powerful men still get away with too much, and many people still believe “boys will be boys.” Dr. Christine Ford will be testifying this week against Brett Kavanaugh, a Supreme Court nominee. She claims he allegedly attempted to rape her when they were teenagagers. During the hearing, let’s hope Senators don’t grill Ford the same way they did Anita Hill. It is not easy for women to come out and speak about abuse or attack, and they should be respected when they do chose to put themselves on the line.
The #MeToo movement is helping women speak out in large numbers about painful things, and this is a great thing.
