Live-Drawing the 93rd Academy Awards

A very diverse evening

As pandemic awards shows go, this Oscar evening was pretty good, it got the job done and there were some beautiful outfits (both men and women). I was not allowed to be there in person as I have for five years running. The Academy allowed minimal press at the event. But I live drew it from my monitor at home as best I could. Much like I did my first Oscar live-drawing in 2015. There is absolutely nothing like being at an event in-person in order to live draw it. I am able to capture so much more, particularly behind the scenes. Next year!

This year’s Academy Awards was notable for the diversity of people and films nominated. Chloe Zhao was the second woman to win in the category of Best Director, and the first woman of color to do so. This win was for her film Nomadland, which also won best picture, and it’s star Frances McDormand won Best Actress.

The dresses were gorgeous, although we saw far fewer this year because not as many people attended the event. Many of the men wore very colorful suits as well, almost as good as the outfits that men tend to wear at the Grammys.

The evening was noticably lacking in humor, save the wonderful acceptance speech of Yuh-Jung Youn which was dotted with unassuming and impromptu humorous remarks. There was a comedic sketch/game thing late in the evening, but it fell flat.

I wish I could have drawn Anthony Hopkins receiving the Best Actor nod for his powerful performance in The Father. Most thought the late Chadwick Boseman would win for his great performance in Ma Rainy’s Black Bottom. Hopkins, perhaps anticipating that Boseman would win the award, did not attend the ceremony, and was asleep when he heard the news of his win. This morning on Instagram, he said the following, “At 83 years of age, I did not expect to get this award. I really didn’t,” Hopkins said. “I’m very grateful to the Academy. Thank you. I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too early. And again, thank you all very much. I really did not expect this, so I feel very privileged and honored, thank you.”
