By a consistent bombing of the erosion of civil discourse
Yesterday, ten packages — and there may be more still to come — were intercepted all over the country by authorities and determined to be suspicious; in them were what appear to be pipe bombs. These packages were sent to former and current government officials and others that have been critical of the current president. The Obamas, The Clintons, Joe Biden, John Brennan, Maxine Waters, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Eric Holder, George Soros, Robert DeNiro. The sender is still at large; his or her intentions unknown.
But what this brings to light is this: civil disagreement is under attack. This is the foundation of our freedom as written in the First Amendment, that we have the right in this country to express ourselve and to disagree; this disagreement, this exchange of ideas, is what keeps us free as a country. Ultimately, it leads us to the truth.
But the tone for what is happening right now — hateful rhetoric, polarizaion, attacks — comes from the top. It threatens our inclination for civil discussion, pits us against one another in horrible ways. What is happening now could be the beginning of a very serious eroding of freedom of expression.
We cannot let that happen.
