Bringing People Together

For a few moments

My husband Michael and I went to a Yankee’s game on Sunday, and had a wonderful time. I think we sat in a section that had the loudest, most engaged fans in the whole stadium!

This kid above was so excited for the Yankees. He was constantly on his feet, yelling and chanting and singing and gesticulating. I took out the only pen I brought with me, a ball point pen, and the little pad I also packed last minute, and drew him. I didn’t like the feel of the pen, but I hope I captured his energy.

What is it about baseball? As I sat there, I tried to figure it out. For one thing, it takes your mind off of worries and deadlines, you can forget for a few hours that the world is scary and sad. I particularly love Yankee stadium because the fans are so diverse: many different nationalities, skin colors, ages. We are all there to share in a love for a team, and a city. It brings people together in any given city, or state. If only it could bring our political parties together.

This older woman above was sitting behind me to my left, and I couldn’t draw her without her noticing. So I snuck a photo and drew her when I got home. I loved the outfit she chose to wear…was it a particularly special dress, since it was Mother’s Day?

The Yankees lost, which we sort of expected since we were playing the Tampa Bay Rays, the best in the league right now. But we gave them a scare, and Aaron Judge almost hit a homer to tie it in the last inning.
