Dr. Caitlin Bernard

I read a story this morning in the NY Times about Dr. Caitlin Bernard, a physician in Indiana. She is the doctor who recently performed an abortion on the 10 year-old rape victim, and she is at the center of the abortion debate. She provides a wide range of health care services for many women patients, including abortions. An activist for women’s rights for years (she has a tatoo of a hanger on her ankle, with the words “trust women”), Dr. Bernard said,

“Physicians who provide abortion have been harassed, they have been murdered,” Dr. Bernard said on Tuesday in an interview with The New York Times. “And for too long, I think, because of that, they’ve had to be silent to protect their families, and it’s created an idea that we’re doing something wrong or something illegal. And we’re not. And I feel compelled to say that.”

Dr. Bernard is a hero for speaking out. Her life is in danger and she has hired securty to protect herself. This should not be happening.

I am so in awe of her bravery, I wanted to draw her, above.

And I just drew this cartoon.

Here is a link to watch me draw the portrait of Dr. Bernard.
