Member-only story
An Unruly House
The Honorable Cheryl L. Johnson
There are many moving parts to this House Speaker voting that’s going on right now, I decided not to live draw it. But I really wanted to draw this woman, the Clerk of the House who presides over it all and keeps members from killing each other. At one point she admonished a GOP speaker for verbally attacking another member. But she uses her gavel with dignity and grace. Her name is The Honorable Cheryl L. Johnson.
She is interesting to watch. Her face betrays nothing, really, and yet shows a bit of annoyance along with business. When I think about the House of Representatives, I think of all the different people that were elected from so many different parts of our country. The characters in that chamber run the gamut, from idealistic public servants to narcissists to, well, perhaps psychopaths. So, her job is not insignificant: Ms. Johnson keeps things moving and keeps the order. I applaud her.
As I am writing this, it appears there may be movement and we will have a Speaker, and thus a working House of Representatives either today or Monday.
But who knows?
