An Afternoon in Manhattan
Live drawing what I see, and there’s always something
One reason why New York City is so fascinating is that in every minute on the street, you see so much; there are so many different types of people, everybody doing their own thing. So many different things are getting done! That said, many people are also doing very little, particularly on a lovey Friday like yesterday in NYC.
The drawing above was done as I sat on a rock in Central Park. I live drew the man, his horse and his handsome cab, waiting for a customer. Thankfully, he waited until I was done to take a fare. You can watch me draw this in the video in the link here:
I get frustrated because I cannot capture as much as I want. I did notice the trend my husband read about in the paper just the day before: young women are wearing very little clothing on the street. So I drew this just now, recalling what I saw over and over again on young women. It was prevalent, down to the cut-off jean shorts, as if a uniform.
I walked further north and sat out front of Lincoln Center and drew a few men in a small park by Broadway. I got caught suddenly in a rain event and had to stop in the middle of drawing the second man.
I took a photo of the scene before I walked on — the man with the dog had departed in the rain, but I captured the other man and finished the drawing. He chose to remain under the trees and not get wet (although he did put away his computer).
